Cambridge Specs section to go from 17 to 23 miles

Police have revealed that the Average speed cameras on the A14 near Cambridge are to be extended.

A six-mile extension to the scheme - which already covers 17 miles from the Spittals interchange near Huntingdon (j23) to Girton (j31) - has already been approved, extending the Specs cameras out to Fen Ditton (j34). The project will go out to tender in the New Year.

Is the 'great speed camera switch-off' slowing down?

Oxfordshire's 72 axed fixed camera sites look set to be turned back on, a mere three months after they were turned off.

The news threatens to reverse the recent trend towards cutting, cancelling or reviewing 'scamera' programmes, which have come under scrutiny in the wake of dramatic cuts in government spending..

All 72 fixed camera sites and 89 mobile sites in Oxfordshire were mothballed in August...

Hundreds of speed cameras to enforce 20mph zones

HUNDREDS of average speed cameras could soon be installed on roads in London.  The devices would be used to enforce 20mph zones and may even replace speed humps.  But campaigners fear they will merely boost local authority coffers with fines up to £95.00.  There are also concerns about a "Big Brother" surveillance society because registration numbers will be stored on police and government databases.

Call to keep cameras ‘that save 100 lives’

SPEED cameras save 100 lives a year in Britain and must be retained in high casualty areas, says a lobby group of nine safety groups. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and the AA are among signatories to a communiqué aimed at stopping cameras being phased out by cost-cutting councils.  ‘Switching off cameras would be close to creating a void in law enforcement on the road,’ the group insists.
