About OLED displays

OLEDs are the very latest development in screen technology. They provide darker blacks, richer colours and better contrast than LCDs, making images and icons, etc, look smoother and more natural. They do not have the restricted viewing angle problem of LCD screens, either; on-screen images look just as crisp when viewed from nearly side-on as they do from the front. Furthermore, OLEDs perform better than LCDs when viewed in direct sunlight and are easier on the eye in the dark. OLED displays do not have to be covered in a fragile glass screen, as LCDs do, and because they are not illuminated by conventional backlighting they are not only considerably thinner than LCDs but also use far less power. How do OLED displays work?

OLED screens contain thin layers of coloured chemicals, arranged into pixels. Individual layers will glow when stimulated with current. This means that, unlike LCDs, OLEDs do not need a backlight, which means they consume much less power.

Touch screen

Many smart phones now feature touch screens; these allow the user to tap through menus, etc, without a physical keypad or keyboard. They come in two forms: resistive touchscreens need a bit of a prod to select options and tend to appear on cheaper devices. Capacitive touchscreens, found mainly on pricier smartphones (and on Pogo Alert+), respond to the electrical properties of human skin. That means they can respond to the slightest touch of the finger – although not if the user is wearing gloves!
